KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has barred its lawmaker Khagendra Sunar from attending public events until investigation on serious allegations against him is completed.
According to a statement issued by party General Secretary Bipin Kumar Acharya, the party has taken serious note of news reports, audio materials and questions raised in the media against Sunar and has directed its Central Disciplinary Commission to immediately initiate an internal investigation to establish the facts.
“To ensure that the investigation is not affected and that ethical standards are maintained, the party has instructed Sunar not to attend any formal event in his capacity as a public officeholder until the investigation is completed,” Acharya said in the statement. “The RSP follows a zero-tolerance policy towards serious and sensitive issues, including acts that undermine women’s dignity and respect, undue pressure, unwarranted threats and suspicious financial transactions.”
The party also pledged full cooperation with independent, impartial and fact-based investigations conducted by the relevant state agencies.
Reaffirming its position that no one is above the law, the RSP said it would not provide political protection to anyone who violates the law or acts contrary to the standards of conduct expected of public officeholders.
In an audio clip published by online news portal Janaastha.com on Monday, a man, allegedly lawmaker Sunar, can be heard threatening and using abusive words against a woman.
