KATHMANDU: Gagan Kumar Thapa has been elected president of the Nepali Congress (NC).
According to Prem Bahadur Khadka, coordinator of the party’s Central Election Committee, Thapa secured 6,584 votes in the election held on Friday, while Shyam Krishna Khadgi received 375 votes.
Thapa defeated Khadgi by a margin of 6,209 votes.
Out of 7,013 votes cast, 54 were declared invalid
Thapa was previously elected general secretary at the party’s 14th general convention. He had been actively campaigning for leadership change and organizational reforms within the party.
He was elected President through a special general convention held in January.
The leadership change following the special convention sparked debate within the party over its legal legitimacy, organizational structure and leadership. Thapa’s election as president through the 15th general convention marks the latest development in the party’s leadership transition.
Meanwhile, the dissident faction of the party led by Sher Bahadur Deuba is holding a separate general convention.
