KATHMANDU: The suspension of Madhesh Province Assembly member Abhiram Sharma, who was accused of involvement in the murder of Armed Police Force (APF) Sub-Inspector Thaman BK, has been lifted.
The Madhesh Provincial Assembly Secretariat lifted the suspension after the Supreme Court ordered that Sharma be kept on a general date.
Madhesh Provincial Assembly Secretary Basu Prasad Koirala said Speaker Ram Ashish Yadav lifted Sharma’s suspension following the apex court order.
According to a notice issued by Koirala, the suspension was lifted effective Monday under Rule 219 (5) of the Madhesh Province Assembly Rules, 2025, after the Supreme Court placed Sharma on a general date on October 9.
BK was injured in an attack by protesters in Jaleshwar of Mahottari on September 11, 2015, during the Madhesh Movement. While he was being taken to Janakpur for treatment, protesters stopped the ambulance and assaulted him again. He died during the incident.
The Mahottari District Court sentenced Sharma and six others to life imprisonment. Following the district court’s verdict, Sharma was suspended from his position as a provincial assembly member and he was declared on the run.
Challenging the district court’s verdict, the defendants appealed to the Janakpur High Court. The high court partially overturned the district court’s ruling, sentencing Sharma, Dharmendra Rai, Ram Shankar Mishra, the then mayor of Jaleshwar Municipality, and Suresh Pandey, among others, to five years in prison each. It upheld the life sentences for the remaining defendants.
Following the high court’s verdict, Sharma, Rai, Mishra and Pandey appeared before the Supreme Court on October 1. The apex court ordered authorities to release all four on a general date.
Sharma was elected to the Madhesh Province Assembly from the Mahottari-3 (A) constituency as a candidate from the then Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP).
