KATHMANDU: Bagmati Province Chief Minister Indra Bahadur Baniya has announced his resignation.
Addressing a meeting of the provincial assembly on Monday, Baniya announced that he would step down from the post.
Baniya was scheduled to take a vote of confidence on Monday after his coalition government with the CPN-UML fell into a minority following the latter’s withdrawal of support. He stepped down after it became certain that he wouldn’t pass the floor test.
UML has already formed a new alliance with the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) to form a new government in the province. As per the understanding between the two parties, UML will form the government in the province with the support of the NCP.
A majority of 53 is needed to form a government in the 104-member Bagmati Provincial Assembly. Baniya had the support of only 36 lawmakers from his party and two from the Hamro Nepal Party (HNP).
Baniya was appointed chief minister of Bagmati Province on August 5, 2025, after he removed Bahadur Singh Tamang as the NC’s parliamentary party leader in the provincial assembly.
Addressing the provincial assembly, Baniya claimed that his government had carried out various works in the interests of the people of the province during his tenure. Although much remained to be done, he said he was compelled to resign due to the changing political circumstances.
