KATHMANDU: Indian Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth arrived in Kathmandu on a three-day visit on Sunday.

Senior officials of the Nepali Army welcomed Seth upon his arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport on Sunday evening.

President Ram Chandra Paudel is scheduled to confer on Seth the honorary rank of General of the Nepali Army amid a ceremony at the Office of the President on Monday.

Nepali Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel received the honorary rank of General of the Indian Army on Dec. 12, 2024.

Seth is the most senior Indian official to visit Nepal since Prime Minister Balen Shah assumed office on March 27. The visit also marks Seth’s first foreign trip since taking charge as chief of the Indian Army.

Seth assumed the post of Chief of the Army Staff of India on June 30, 2026.

The Indian Army said in a social media post on Sunday that the visit aims to further foster mutual understanding, exchange views on aspects of common interest and strengthen bilateral defense cooperation between the two nations.

Nepal and India have maintained a tradition of conferring the honorary rank of General on each other’s army chiefs since 1950. General KM Cariappa of India was the first recipient of the honorary rank from Nepal.

Similarly, General Surendra Bahadur Shah was the first Chief of the Nepali Army to receive the honorary rank of General from the Indian Army.
