Your controversies will also come out, Wagle warns lawmakers

KATHMANDU: Minister for Finance Swarnim Wagle on Thursday warned lawmakers, who raised questions about him, that their own past controversies could also come to light.

Speaking at a meeting of the House of Representatives, Wagle said old files could be reopened and scrutinized as well. “Are we unaware of your controversies? Those, too, will come out,” Wagle said.

He also urged lawmakers not to diminish the dignity of Parliament. “I have even heard claims that Swarnim Wagle sat in the finance ministry manipulating taxes to benefit certain businesspeople,” he said. “Lawmakers must uphold their own dignity. We should not engage in actions that undermine the prestige of this respected House.”

Wagle has been facing allegations of manipulating tax rates and leaking confidential budget information regarding tax rates on EVs, enabling importers to bring a large shipment just ahead of the budget presentation.

Rejecting allegations that tax rates had been manipulated in the budget, Wagle said he would resign from public office if any wrongdoing on his part were proven.

“I said the same thing today at the Public Accounts Committee. Not Rs 2 billion—even if it is proven that I committed wrongdoing or dishonesty involving just two rupees, I will resign as minister. I am even prepared to leave public life altogether,” Wagle said.

Wagle questioned whether his team could have betrayed the public’s trust only two months after voters had endorsed their strong commitment to good governance.

He maintained that the allegations were unfounded and reiterated his commitment to transparency and integrity in public office.
