KATHMANDU: The National Assembly meeting has been adjourned until June 9 due to continuous protests by lawmakers over Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s recent statements regarding the Nepal-India border issue.
As soon as Wednesday’s session began, members stood in protest, insisting that parliamentary proceedings could not proceed unless the Prime Minister corrected his statement. Following the disruption, National Assembly Chairperson Narayan Prasad Dahal postponed the meeting for a week.
During a question-and-answer session on Sunday, Prime Minister Shah said he had learned that Nepal had also encroached on India’s land.
Lawmakers from both houses have since demanded that the PM appear before the House to retract his statement and have his remarks expunged from the parliamentary record. Earlier on Tuesday, Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal postponed the House of Representatives meeting until June 8 following similar protests by opposition lawmakers over the Prime Minister’s comments.
Speaking earlier in the National Assembly session, member Sunil Bahadur Thapa labeled the Prime Minister’s remarks as irresponsible and baseless. He added that the Prime Minister’s comments were immature and could negatively affect relations with the neighboring country.
