KATHMANDU: The government has announced plans to blacktop 1,000 kilometres of roads and construct 200 road bridges in the upcoming fiscal year 2026/27.
Presenting the budget for the new fiscal year on Friday, Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle said the government would accelerate strategic road projects and expand transport connectivity across the country.
The government has set a target to complete the expansion of the East-West Highway into a four-lane road within the next five years.
Likewise, construction work on the Narayanghat–Butwal and Kamala–Kanchanpur sections of the highway will be completed within the current fiscal year, Minister Wagle added.
He also said an additional 80 km of road construction under the highway project would be completed within the next two years. The government has allocated Rs 37.46 billion for the East-West Highway expansion project.
For the Kathmandu-Tarai/Madhesh Fast Track project, the government has allocated Rs17.64 billion for the construction of 40 bridges and four tunnels.
Likewise, Rs 4.65 billion has been allocated for the Hulaki Rajmarga project, while the Karnali Highway has received a budget allocation of Rs 1 billion.
The Mid-Hill Highway project has been allocated Rs 2.16 billion in the upcoming fiscal year budget.
According to Minister Wagle, the government will conduct studies of tunnel road projects like Tokha-Chahare, Khurkot-Chiaybari, and Chandragiri-Chitlang, among others.
