KATHMANDU: Veteran Nepali climber Kami Rita Sherpa scaled Mount Everest for a record 32nd time on Sunday, further extending his own world record for the highest number of ascents of the world’s tallest mountain.
According to the expedition organizer, 14 Peaks Expedition, the 55-year-old climber reached the 8,848.86-meter summit at 10:12 am, leading the Adventure24 14 Peaks Everest Expedition 2026.
Kami Rita first summited Everest in 1994 and has since become one of the most celebrated figures in Himalayan mountaineering.
“Your achievement is not only a personal milestone but also a proud moment for Nepal and the global climbing community. Thank you for carrying the spirit of the Himalayas to the world,” 14 Peaks Expedition said in a social media post.
Born in the Everest region, Kami Rita has spent much of his life working in the mountains and guiding climbers from around the world to the summit of Everest and other Himalayan peaks.
Kami Rita broke Apa Sherpa’s record of 21 summits in 2018.
