KATHMANDU: High Court Judge Basudev Acharya has been appointed Chairperson of the Special Court.
The Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday decided to appoint Acharya to the position.
A meeting of the Judicial Council held on July 16 had recommended him for the post. He replaces Sudarshan Dev Bhatta who had been serving as the Special Court Chairperson.
Acharya is known in judicial circles for his in-depth knowledge of the law, his ability to grasp the essence of cases quickly, and his timely delivery of verdicts. Courts where he has served have recorded notable increases in case disposal rates. As the Special Court handles a heavy caseload involving corruption and money laundering, it is expected that the rate of verdicts will accelerate under Acharya’s leadership.
While serving at the Rajbiraj Bench of the Janakpur High Court, Acharya established himself as the judge who disposed of the highest number of cases. He continued his rapid pace of work while serving at the Bhutwal High Court. He always prioritized clearing backlogged cases, making hearings more effective, and delivering timely verdicts.
As Chairperson of the Labor Court in Kathmandu, Acharya delivered the highest number of verdicts in the court’s history since its establishment. He is known for his ability to quickly understand the nature and complexity of cases, avoid unnecessary delays in hearings, and issue clear decisions based on evidence and legal grounds.
At a time when the number of high-profile corruption cases has been increasing, it is expected that the leadership of a judge skilled in case management and known for delivering swift verdicts will further enhance the effectiveness of the Special Court.
