KATHMANDU: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has begun construction of the Lekhnath–Damauli 220 kV Transmission Line.

The project’s groundbreaking ceremony was held at the Damauli Substation in Tanahun on Wednesday in the presence of NEA Managing Director Hitendra Dev Shakya, German Ambassador to Nepal Udo Volz, and representatives from KfW Development Bank and GIZ, among others.

Co-financed by Germany through KfW Development Bank, the project includes the construction of a 45-kilometre 220 kV double-circuit transmission line and modern gas-insulated substations in Lekhnath and Damauli.

With a transmission capacity of around 1,000 MW, the project is expected to significantly enhance the regional electricity grid and facilitate efficient evacuation of power generated by several hydropower projects, including the Tanahun Hydropower Project, according to a statement issued by the German embassy in Kathmandu.

“The expansion of reliable transmission infrastructure is essential for Nepal’s growing energy needs,” Ambassador Volz said on the occasion, adding that Germany is committed to supporting Nepal in harnessing its renewable energy potential and ensuring that clean electricity reaches households, businesses, and industries.

Germany’s development cooperation has a long history in Nepal’s energy sector, beginning with support for hydropower projects such as the Lower Marsyangdi Hydropower Project and the Middle Marsyangdi Hydropower Project. In recent years, cooperation has expanded to transmission infrastructure, including the Chilime–Trishuli line and the National Load Dispatch Centre.

German support has also extended to renewable energy initiatives, including solar power systems and irrigation, contributing to around 55 MW of solar photovoltaic capacity in Nepal.

In addition to financial assistance from KfW, technical support provided by GIZ has focused on strengthening policies, systems, and skills in the energy sector.
