KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has expressed his desire to contest the House of Representatives elections from Dadeldhura district for the eighth time.
Deuba has told his near ones that this will be his final electoral contest. He is the only leader to have been continuously elected in every election since 1991. He has been elected to parliament from the district seven times.
“We discussed the upcoming elections and the party’s general convention with the party president on Monday. He said he wants to contest the election from Dadeldhura one last time,” Bhuvan Bhatta, an NC leader from Dadeldhura, said.
Bhatta added that Deuba also reiterated his commitment to ensuring meaningful representation of youth in both the party’s general convention and the national elections. “It is necessary to increase the party’s appeal among the younger generation,” Deuba said in the meeting, according to Bhatta.
Hemraj Chataut, Secretary of the Dadeldhura District Committee of the NC, said the district committee will finalize the party’s candidate for the elections on Thursday. “The party president is popular across all age groups and constituencies of the district. As long as he wishes to run, we will not recommend any other candidate,” Chataut said.
NC leader Dila Sangraula also said it is natural for Deuba to maintain his aspiration as long as district leaders and cadres wish for him to contest. “If the people of Dadeldhura want him, no one can stop it. His desire to run again should be seen positively,” she said.
The House of Representatives elections are scheduled for March 5.
Deuba has been active in the NC for the past six decades. The 79-year-old was first elected from Dadeldhura in 1991. He was subsequently elected in the parliamentary elections of 1994 and 1999, the Constituent Assembly elections of 2008 and 2013, and the House of Representatives elections of 2017 and 2022. He has served as Prime Minister a record five times.
