Sunsari Incident: PM Shah appeals for restraint

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Balendra Shah has appealed for restraint in the wake of the Sunsari incident.

In a social media post on Tuesday night, Shah expressed sorrow over the loss of life and pledged justice for the victims, compensation for those affected, and legal action against those responsible.

“The incident in Sunsari has created fear, mistrust and unrest in society. The government is making urgent decisions to prevent such occurrences in the future,” he said, assuring that justice and compensation would be delivered at the earliest and that those involved would face action in accordance with the law.

Shah added that although the government had been active since the outset of the incident, the efforts made so far were insufficient and a comprehensive review of the situation is underway.

“The death and injuries of civilians due to police firing cannot be considered normal under any circumstances. An investigation has already begun and anyone found guilty will face legal consequences,” he added.

Shah also urged the public to remain calm until the investigation is completed and called on all sides to avoid anger, retaliation and provocation. He also requested all to uphold social harmony, compassion and mutual respect.

The prime minister paid tribute to the deceased and offered his condolences to the bereaved family, and wished for a speedy recovery of the injured.

Om Prakash Mehta of Dewangunj-4 was killed and 22 others, including security personnel, were injured on Sunday night when police opened fire to control clashes between two communities in Kaptaingunj of Sunsari.
