KATHMANDU: UN Special Rapporteur on minority issues, Nicolas Levrat, arrived in Kathmandu on Thursday to assess the situation of national, ethnic, religious, and linguistic minorities.
During the mission between December 4 and 13, Levrat will examine Nepal’s laws, policies, and institutional practices affecting minority communities, with a focus on political participation, education, access to justice, and the functioning of the criminal justice system, including issues related to hate crimes and hate speech, the United Nations said in a statement.
Levrat is scheduled to meet government officials, minority representatives, civil society organisations, religious leaders, and other stakeholders. He will also visit Madhesh Province and Karnali Province.
The Special Rapporteur will present his findings to the UN Human Rights Council in March 2026.
