KATHMANDU: Gen Z protesters have formally asked President Ram Chandra Paudel to recall Prime Minister Sushila Karki, whom they themselves had backed to lead the interim government after the September 8 and 9 Gen Z uprising.
In a joint memorandum submitted to President Paudel, 23 Gen Z groups argued that the government is not operating in line with the spirit of the uprising. Instead, they said, it is moving solely toward holding an early election while disregarding the expectations of those who took to the streets.
The groups said they had expected the government to take action against those involved in major corruption cases, amend the constitution to pave the way for a directly elected prime minister, and prosecute those responsible for the killings during the uprising. “None of this is happening,” they said. “Instead of fulfilling even the minimum expectations of the protesters, the government has ignored all demands and is functioning aimlessly, preparing only for an election. The uprising and the sacrifices made were not for an early election alone.”
They also asked the President to step in if the Karki-led government failed to address their demands. “If this government cannot address the demands of the rebel side, we request you to recall it and mediate the formation of a new government under our leadership,” they said in the memorandum.
The Gen Z groups also said that they would launch peaceful protests and pressure campaigns against the government in the coming days.
Gen Z groups like Gen Z National Frontliner, Gen Z Spark, N.Tech Gen Z, Gen Z By United, Jen Z Assembly, Gen Z Parliament, Gen Z United, Gen Z 2.0, All Nation Gen Z, Independent Gen Z Nepal, Gen Z Height Forum and Gen Z Movement have signed the memorandum.
