KATHMANDU: The Janamat Party has split after a faction of leaders dissatisfied with Chairperson CK Raut’s leadership style filed an application with the Election Commission (EC) to register a new political party.
A group led by former Janamat Party Vice Chairperson Deepak Sah has applied to register a new party named the Janaswaraj Party, according to the Election Commission.
According to Bishnu Paudel, the deputy spokesperson for the EC, an application has been filed to register a new party formed after a split from the Janamat Party. “We have received an application to register a new party under the leadership of Deepak Sah following a split in the Janamat Party,” Paudel told Himal Press over the phone.
The application was submitted with the signatures of 20% of the Janamat Party’s Central Committee members.
“They claim to have submitted signatures of 20% of Janamat’s Central Committee members. The EC will soon fix a date for verification,” Paudel said. “They have also not submitted the flag and election symbol of the proposed party.”
According to leaders involved in the move, the proposed Janaswaraj Party will initially have a 15-member working committee.
“We have initiated the process of registering a new party. The application has been submitted to the EC,” Sah said.
Earlier, the Janamat Party had expelled Sah and several others, including then-treasurer Surendra Yadav, accusing them of working against the party’s interests. Recently, six senior leaders — Vice Chairperson Abdul Khan, Spokesperson Dr Sharad Singh Yadav, Youth Wing Coordinator CK Singh, Far-Western In-Charge Rajaram Chaudhary and National Council Member Bikram Bahadur Bam — had quit the party after giving Raut a 24-hour ultimatum to quit party leadership.
