
KATHMANDU: Noted Nepali language writer Lil Bahadur Chhetri passed away at his residence in Guwahati, India, on Thursday night. He was 94.
Born in Assam, India, Chhetri is best known for his novel Basain, which translates into migration. It was included in the curriculum for the Intermediate level at the Tribhuvan University. The novel captures the struggles of migration and rural life.
Chhetri’s other literary works include Brahmaputrako Chheu Chhau, Atripta, Pratidhaniharu, Bismritiko Assam Ma Nepali Bhashako Sangro Gahro and Teen Dashak Bees Abhivyakti, among others. Brahmaputrako Chheu Chhau earned him the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in India in 1977.
He was awarded the prestigious Jagamba Shree prize in 2015. In 2020, he received Padma Shree from the President of India for his contribution to literature and education.
