KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has issued a show cause notice to the government, questioning the commutation of prison terms for individuals convicted in the Tikapur Massacre.
A single bench of Justice Prakash Kumar Dhungana issued the order following a writ petition filed by Sharada Bohara, the widow of Police Inspector Keshav Bohora, who was among those killed in the massacre.
President Ram Chandra Poudel had pardoned the remaining jail term of Resham Chaudhary, the main accused, on Republic Day, May 28. Additionally, the prison sentences of Hari Narayan Chaudhary, Bir Bahadur Chaudhary, Pradip Chaudhary, and others were commuted on Constitution Day, September 20.
The release of Resham Chaudhary was a condition set by the Nagarik Unmukti Party, which he founded, in exchange for supporting Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s government. Chaudhary’s wife, Ranjeeta Shrestha, currently serves as the Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives, and Poverty Alleviation in Dahal’s cabinet.
Eight police personnel and a toddler were killed in the Tikapur Massacre which occurred in 2015 in Tikapur of Kailali.
