ITAHARI: Residents of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City and Barahakshetra Municipality are fearful as wild elephants have been causing destruction in the area.

A herd of about two dozen elephants recently arrived in the area causing the destruction of property and loss of life in Sunsari district. Recently, Dhan Bahadur Majhi (70) of Simarban in Barahakshetra Municipality-5 passed away as a result of an attack by a male elephant two days ago.

According to the District Police Office in Sunsari, locals have requested for increased security measures as wild elephants have begun terrorizing the community.

Manoj Bhattarai, chairman of Ward-17 of Dharan Sub-metropolitan City, said wild elephants are active in Patanali, Kumbhiahal and other surrounding areas. “Property of hundreds of thousands of rupees have been damaged as tuskers damage people’s houses and crops,” he added.

Wild elephants have also been found roaming near Barahakshetra, Chatara, Nadaha and Chakragatti, among other areas, according to the local administration.
