RSP Siraha convention postponed as consensus eludes party leaders

KATHMANDU: The district convention of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in Siraha has been postponed following a dispute over the selection of the district leadership.

The controversy reportedly erupted after the party’s lawmakers intervened in the convention on Monday.

Three candidates, Sujhab Yadav, Ramsogarath Yadav and incumbent district president Hari Mainali, are vying for the party’s district leadership.

Following the opening session on Sunday, lawmakers, including Tapeshwar Yadav, who is also the RSP’s Madhesh Province president, Shiva Yadav, Bablu Gupta, Shambhu Yadav and proportional representation lawmaker Purushottam Yadav, attempted to build consensus around a single candidate.

However, after failing to reach an agreement, voting was scheduled to begin after 2 pm on Monday. The dispute arose after allegations of irregularities in the voting process.

Chief Election Commissioner Bhuvan KC said the election process for the Siraha district convention had been suspended for the time being. “The entire electoral process was halted after the crowd became increasingly agitated and potentially violent,” he added.

KC said an understanding had been reached among incumbent district president Mainali and lawmakers Purushottam Yadav, Bablu Gupta and Shiva Yadav.

“An agreement has been reached to resume the election process from 9 am on Tuesday,” he added.
