KATHMANDU: The government has decided to relocate a male rhinoceros from Chitwan National Park (CNP) to Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve.

According to CNP, the Ministry for Forest and Environment decided to send one male rhino to Koshi Tappu to facilitate rhino reproduction in the wildlife reserve.

Last year, two female rhinos named Pushpa and Anjali, who were rescued as orphans by CNP officials, were relocated to Koshi Tappu. Authorities are hopeful that this male rhino will begin rhino reproduction in Koshi Tappu.

Female rhinos become ready for reproduction when they turn four. Anjali is 51 months old, while Pushpa is 36 months old.

Meanwhile, rhino relocation from the national park’s western area to the eastern area where the rhino density is comparatively less is underway. So far, three rhinos have already been relocated to eastern part of the national park, according to CNP officials.

Nepal has 752 rhinos as per the latest census.
