EC revises voting weights assigned to electors for National Assembly election

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has revised the voting weights assigned to electors for the National Assembly election.

Issuing a statement on Wednesday, the EC announced that the Mayor/Chairperson of local units will now carry a vote weight of 53, and the deputy mayor/vice chairperson will carry a vote weight of 19. This adjustment is based on the 2021 census data, according to the statement.

The National Assembly consists of 59 members, with eight members elected from each of the seven provinces, and three appointed by the President. Members are elected by an electoral college comprising the mayor/chairperson and deputy mayor/vice chairperson of municipal bodies nationwide.

The EC has announced that the Mayor/Chairperson will now carry a vote weight of 53, and the deputy mayor/vice chairperson will carry a vote weight of 18. The adjustment is based on the 2021 census data, according to the EC.

Previously, the Mayor/Chairperson carried a vote weight of 48, and the deputy mayor/vice chairperson had a vote weight of 18.

The six-year tenure of 20 members, including National Assembly Chairman Ganesh Prasad Timilsina, is ending on March 4. The EC has proposed to hold the election for these 20 seats, along with the vacant seats in the House of Representatives and provincial assemblies, in January.
