KATHMANDU: The Asset (Money Laundering) Prevention (Third Amendment) Bill, 2026 has been passed by the House of Representatives.
During a meeting of the House of Representatives on Thursday, Minister for Finance Swarnim Wagle tabled a proposal to endorse the bill. The proposal was approved by a majority vote.
Before the vote, the House discussed the amendments registered on the Bill, which were then presented for decision. Responding to queries raised during the discussion, Minister Wagle said the government was serious about making the Department of Money Laundering Investigation (DoMLI) more effective.
He also added that discussions were underway to establish a powerful “Economic Crime Authority,” similar to the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, to address not only money laundering but broader financial crimes.
“When multiple agencies investigate issues arising from the same source, it increases the state’s costs, adds pressure on the judicial system, and creates difficulties in recovering damages,” he said. “Therefore, the government is seeking necessary legal reforms to address these challenges.”
