NC seeks govt’s official position on NHRC report

KATHMANDU: The main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) has demanded that the government make public its official position on the report released by the National Human Rights Commission (NRC) regarding last September’s protest, which claimed 76 lives and caused losses worth billions of rupees.

In a statement issued on Thursday by party spokesperson Devraj Chalise, the NC drew the government’s attention to the implementation of the commission’s report, impartial action against those involved in violent incidents, relief for victims, and reforms in the security sector.

The party said the government should act on the commission’s recommendations and proceed with legal action, free from political pressure, against lawmakers, individuals or institutions found involved in the violent incidents that took place on September 8 and 9 last year.

“The process of legal action should be initiated against lawmakers, individuals or institutions identified by the commission in connection with excessive use of force by the state and all violent incidents that occurred on September 8 and 9. The process must remain free from government influence and political pressure,” the statement said.

The Nepali Congress also demanded justice, relief and rehabilitation for the families of those killed or injured due to excessive use of force, and called on the state to compensate losses suffered by the private sector.

The statement also said security agencies need to be reviewed and reformed to make them modern, effective and human rights-friendly. Referring to the previously formed commission led by former Judge  Gauri Bahadur Karki Commission, the party claimed its report was incomplete, inadequate and limited in scope.

The NC also said the NHRC had identified the failure of state mechanisms and the excessive use of force by security agencies as human rights violations, and urged the government to bring those responsible within the constitutional and legal framework.
