KATHMANDU: The ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has urged the government to conduct an independent, impartial and swift investigation into the recent fatal police firing in Sunsari.
The party has also demanded strict legal action against those responsible and proper justice, compensation and free medical treatment for the victims.
On Sunday night, Om Prakash Mehta of Dewangunj–4 was killed after being shot by police during a clash between two groups in Kaptangunj, Dewangunj–3. Eight others sustained serious gunshot injuries, while 14 police personnel were also injured in the incident.
In a statement issued by RSP President Rabi Lamichhane on Tuesday, the party called on the government to ensure a thorough probe into the root causes of the incident and to take firm action against the perpetrators, while also providing relief, including compensation and free treatment, to the victims.
The statement said the party was shocked and deeply saddened by the tense situation created by the incident. It extended condolences to the bereaved family and wished for a speedy recovery of the injured civilians and security personnel.
“No problem or dispute can be resolved through violence or confrontation,” the party added in the statement.
Similarly, the party has urged all sides to exercise restraint and refrain from actions that could disrupt Nepal’s pluralistic culture, mutual unity, tolerance and social harmony.
The statement appealed to the general public, civil society leaders, religious and social figures, and other stakeholders to stay away from rumors and provocation.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has formed an investigation committee under a joint secretary to probe the incident.
