Nepse tanks 71.05 points in first trading session after new govt formation

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Stock Exchange (Nepse) index plunged sharply on Sunday, shedding 71.05 points to close trading at 2,879.11 points.

The slide also meant the benchmark index fell below the psychological support level of 2,900 points after five sessions.

The benchmark index, which had bounced back on Thursday, the last trading day of the previous week, after its five-day winning streak was snapped on Wednesday, failed to sustain momentum and declined by 2.4% on Sunday.

Despite expectations that the market would respond positively to the formation of a new government, investor sentiment remained weak. Unit prices of 255 scrips declined, while only 10 advanced and one remained unchanged. Ridi Power Company Ltd logged the highest turnover of the session with total transactions worth Rs 711.17 million. Ngadi Group Power Ltd and Solu Hydropower Company Ltd were next with turnovers of Rs 522.86 million and Rs 486.93 million, respectively.

Despite Nepse’s loss, total turnover slightly improved to Rs 15.03 billion with 35.24 million units traded through 196,158 transactions.

Among trading groups, the Finance sub-index suffered the biggest loss of 3.38%. Next were Trading and Investment sub-indices with losses of 3.01% and 2.98%, respectively.
