NEA running three Kulekhani projects at full capacity

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is running the Kulekhani Hydropower Project and its two cascade units at full capacity to prevent the water level in the project’s reservoir from rising further.

According to Pralhad Raut, chief of the Kulekhani I Hydropower Centre, electricity was being generated at full capacity to make maximum use of the water, given the Meteorological Forecasting Division’s projection of heavy rainfall and continued rainfall.

The water level in the Kulekhani reservoir currently stands at 1,522.75 meters, Raut said, adding that the level had not risen significantly because all three units were operating at full capacity.

According to Raut, the project’s three units, with a combined capacity of 106 MW, are generating 60 MW, 32 MW and 14 MW, respectively.

He said a warning system has been put in place to sound a siren when the reservoir’s water level reaches 1,527 meters, to alert local residents to take necessary precautions against potential risks.
