KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress (NC) is preparing to postpone its 15th General Convention by a few days, citing disruptions caused by heavy rainfall, floods and landslides across the country.
NC Spokesperson Devraj Chalise said the party was considering postponing the convention because the recent disasters have affected daily life in many parts of the country.
“People’s lives have been affected in many places due to floods and landslides. In some places, municipal conventions have not been completed,” Chalise said. “Roads and transportation routes have also been disrupted. Delegates need to arrive before the convention scheduled to begin on October 2. So, the party is mulling over postponing the convention by a few days.”
The NC is scheduled to hold its 15th General Convention from October 2 to 5.
Chalise said a party meeting scheduled for Tuesday morning could decide whether to postpone the convention.
“The party is also examining potential legal complications associated with changing the dates,” he said.
While presenting its position before the Supreme Court in a dispute over the party’s legitimacy, the NC had said that it would hold its 15th General Convention from October 2 to 5.
“We stated before the Supreme Court in connection with the legitimacy dispute that we would hold the 15th general convention from October 2 to 5,” he said. “Since we have already specified the dates, we also need to discuss whether postponing the convention now could create any legal complications. A final decision on all these issues will be made Tuesday.”
The discussion of postponing the general convention comes as several parts of the country remain affected by floods and landslides following four days of continuous rainfall.
