EC issues 64-point directive to candidates, political parties

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has issued a 64-point directive to political parties and candidates in connection with the upcoming House of Representatives elections.

Speaking at an interaction with journalists in Kathmandu on Sunday, Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari said the directive is based on the election code of conduct issued earlier by the EC.

According to the EC, candidates will be allowed to organize rallies, mass meetings, corner assemblies, and door-to-door campaigns only between February 16 and March 2. Campaign activities can be organized only between 7 am and 7 pm.

The EC has also stated that all election-related expenses must be made through banks or financial institutions. Similarly, candidates must submit a complete statement of election expenses to the EC within 35 days of the announcement of results.

The EC has also prohibited the distribution or use of materials bearing election symbols, such as T-shirts, caps, bags, masks, or lockets.

Bhandari said that the EC will regularly monitor compliance with the code of conduct. “Violations can result in warnings, fines, or even cancellation of candidacy,” he said, expressing confidence that political parties and candidates will adhere to the code of conduct.

He also informed that the EC has already allocated a budget for voter education and is closely monitoring whether the funds are being spent properly.
