Special convention demand no longer relevant, says Deuba camp NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba

KATHMANDU: The establishment faction of the Nepali Congress (NC) has concluded that there is no longer any justification for holding a special convention.

A meeting held at the residence of party President Sher Bahadur Deuba in Maharajgunj on Sunday noted that a special convention is not necessary since the party has already fixed the date for its regular general convention.

The Central Work Execution Committee meeting of the party held on Friday decided to hold the party’s 15th General Convention in Kathmandu from May 11 to 14.

General Secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma announced on Thursday that the general convention scheduled for January 10-13 has been postponed and that the party will now address a demand made by 54% of representatives to hold a special convention.

Following the meeting, former Vice-President Bimalendra Nidhi stated that the meeting held on Sunday also decided to convey a message to general convention representatives across the country that there is no need for them to come to Kathmandu. “The meeting also decided to urge party leaders and cadres nationwide to focus on preparations for the upcoming House of Representatives elections,” Nidhi added.

Deuba called the meeting of leaders of his faction after the two general secretaries said the party was now left with no option but to hold a special convention. General Secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma announced on Thursday that the general convention scheduled for January 10-13 has been postponed and that the party will now address a demand made by 54% of representatives to hold a special convention. They also said the party would send an invitation to the representatives to attend the special convention.

Meanwhile, the Nepali Congress has called a meeting of its Central Work Execution Committee for 1:00 PM on Monday to further discuss these internal developments.
