KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has said that discussions were underway within the party on the dispute over the date of the general convention, the message delivered by the voers, and the agenda for necessary reforms.
In a social media post on Tuesday, Thapa said the internal debate should focus not just on fixing the date of the convention but on how the party can be reformed.
Stating that the party can no longer function with the same old style and work culture, he argued that only reform can restore the waning public trust in the party. “We will go to the elections, but with new energy and a reformed NC,” he said, urging party supporters to be patient.
Thapa claimed that standing in support of the truth would not split the party but make it stronger. “We will neither bend nor bow,” he wrote in the post
He added that the party is currently facing two internal questions: whether to proceed with the regular general convention or to call a special convention.
Stating that the events of September 8 and 9 have made a significant impact on the NC, Thapa said the party could no longer function as it did before. “The public wants change; our lawmakers and leaders must take that seriously,” he said.
He urged the party to look beyond electoral calculations, identify the reforms needed, develop new thinking, and renew itself.
