KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has refused to grant legitimacy to the Janaswaraj Party, which was formed following a split from the Janamat Party.
A full bench comprising Justices Sapana Pradhan Malla, Sunil Kumar Pokharel, and Megh Raj Pokharel delivered the verdict on Thursday. The bench ruled that the Election Commission’s decision to register the party was not in accordance with the law.
After the EC registered the Janaswaraj Party, Janamat Chairperson CK Raut filed a petition, challenging the EC’s decision to recognize the Janaswaraj Party.
Deepak Sah, who was sacked as Vice Chairperson of Janamat, and about 20% of Central Committee members of Janamat Party had registered the Janaswaraj Party with the Election Commission on October 14.
The Supreme Court earlier issued an interim order against the EC’s decision to maintain the status quo, pending verification of party members.
