KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said the demands raised by the Gen Z movement represent a shared national agenda of all Nepali people.
Addressing the Constitution Day ceremony in Kathmandu on Friday, Karki said the youth launched a protest against the government because Nepal has yet to fully uphold the democratic values and constitutional rights guaranteed to the people.
“The demands raised by Gen Z concern employment opportunities, quality of life, transparency in governance, legal equality, an end to corruption, good governance and development,” Karki said. “These demands are not limited to a single generation—they are the collective agenda of all Nepalis.”
She urged everyone to remain committed to democratic principles such as federal republican governance, fundamental rights, human rights, press freedom, an independent and capable judiciary, rule of law, and good governance.
Karki clarified that she did not assume the premiership out of personal ambition but because the country is in crisis. “I could not ignore the call of the younger generation demanding change,” she said, adding that her responsibility is to conduct House of Representatives elections within six months, as mandated by the constitution, and to transfer power to an elected government.
Stating that the Constitution Day is an occasion of pride for all Nepalis, she said it should not be seen merely as a celebration but as an occasion to evaluate the progress of the federal democratic republic.
