KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has said that his party should apologise to the people for the untoward incidents in different parts of the country on Monday and Tuesday.
Releasing a video message on Friday, Thapa said since the NC was in the coalition government, it should take responsibility for the incidents that unfolded over those two days.
“An unimaginable incident that none of us wanted occurred over the past few days. Though we were not in government, our party was. A stain has been left on our face. The NC must apologize to the entire nation for this,” Thapa said. “Public anger must be acknowledged and addressed, but incidents carried out with malicious intent must be brought under the scope of law. Once a new government is formed, there must be an investigation into the inhumane incidents of September 8 and 9, and the guilty must be punished according to law.”
Thapa admitted that the party has failed to operate at the right pace and direction. “Why has public trust broken? We must review this. Especially the younger generation has turned away from us,” Thapa said in the message. “Why are they not with us? We must not only seek the answer, but also take action.”
Thapa also said the NC must take the lead in reconstruction, just as it had closed old wounds in the past by reaching an agreement with the Maoists. “We must act responsibly again—not by fueling provocation, but by taking the initiative to unite everyone,” he said.
He added that the party has been engaging in continuous dialogue with the President, other political parties and protestors.
Thapa also pledged that the NC would correct its course, rise stronger and work to free society from deep partisan divides. “Unnecessary structures within the party must be removed, and factionalism must come to an end,” he added.
