KATHMANDU: Former General Secretary of the Nepali Congress (NC) Dr Shashank Koirala has urged the party leadership to put all organizational and policy decisions, including preparations for its upcoming general convention, on hold.
In a letter sent to the party’s Central Working Committee on Tuesday, Koirala, who leads the National Gathering Organizing Committee of the party’s dissident faction, urged party leaders not to make any far-reaching decisions until the Supreme Court delivers its final verdict on a case concerning party leadership.
“Since the Supreme Court has decided to review its earlier verdict of a case related to the party leadership, proceeding with organizational activities and decisions before the case is finally settled can create further legal complications,” the letter states.
Koirala urged party leadership to immediately suspend all organizational, technical, and policy-related schedules related to the upcoming 15th General Convention or a special general convention.
He said the party’s entire organizational structure should remain unchanged in its current form until the Supreme Court’s full bench issues its final verdict.
Drawing attention to the principle of the rule of law, Koirala warned that no activities should be carried out in a manner that could affect the final outcome of a case pending before the court. He also warned that activities contrary to this principle could invite contempt-of-court proceedings or other legal consequences.
Koirala sent copies of the letter to the Election Commission, party President Gagan Kumar Thapa, and party units at the provincial, district, constituency, and local levels. However, he addressed Thapa as the party’s then general secretary.
The NC’s Central Working Committee has been meeting for several days. Thapa has said the 15th General Convention will be held starting October 2.
Meanwhile, the dissident faction is organizing a national gathering in Kathmandu from August 14 to 16.
