KATHMANDU: US Ambassador to Nepal, Dean R Thompson, met with Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Deepak Khadka, at the latter’s office in Singha Durbar on Wednesday.
The discussion focused on energy cooperation between the two countries and various aspects of implementing the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) projects in Nepal, according to a member of Minister Khadka’s secretariat.
During the meeting, Minister Khadka said the temporary hold on the MCC initiative has created some uncertainty. He expressed confidence that the MCC projects would move forward soon. Khadka added that Nepal expects further US support in the country’s energy sector.
In response, Ambassador Thompson assured continued US support and cooperation in Nepal’s energy sector. He added that all possible efforts are being made to advance the MCC projects and urged the Government of Nepal to provide the necessary support to ensure the continuity of projects currently underway under the MCC.
Representatives from MCC and Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Nepal were also present at the meeting.
Nepal is building a 400 kV double-circuit transmission line spanning 315 km and three new substations as part of the MCC Nepal Compact. Similarly, improving a 77 km section of the East-West Highway is another component of the MCC Nepal Compact.
