KATHMANDU: CPN (Maoist Center) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal has insisted that the six ordinances brought by the government will not be passed.
Speaking at a program organized by the Maoist Center’s Karnali Province Committee in Surkhet on Tuesday, Dahal said since the ordinances undermine parliament, they cannot be passed. “The government brought ordinances by devaluing the parliament, which was wrong. We have rejected it. The government does not have the majority to push through such measures,” he added.
Although the ruling coalition enjoys a comfortable majority in the House of Representatives, it is one seat short of a majority in the National Assembly. However, the support of Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal would be sufficient to pass the ordinances introduced in the second week of July. JSP Nepal said on Tuesday that it may support five ordinances, but won’t vote for the land-related ordinance.
Dahal also clarified that the Maoist Centre’s current focus is not on the government. “We will not remain silent if we see any wrongdoing,” he maintained.
The former Prime Minister also said that discussions on party unity are ongoing with CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairperson Madhav Kumar Nepal and Nepal Communist Party (NCP) General Secretary Netra Bikram Chand. He added that since the Socialist Front was formed to promote party unification, talks are ongoing in that direction.
Dahal also said his party has made community-based socialism as the main objective of the party. He also urged party cadres to implement programs in line with the party’s directives at the local levels where the party has won. “Let’s move forward by developing programs based on local characteristics, geography, ethnicity and social structure. Let’s keep community-based socialism as our foundation,” Dahal added.
