Ordinance rule an insult to parliament: Dahal CPN (Maoist Center) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal

KATHMANDU: Leader of the main opposition, Chairperson of the CPN (Maoist Centre) Pushpa Kamal Dahal, has questioned the need for a legislature if the executive is to handle all responsibilities.

“The parliamentary session was called on January 21, yet just six days before that, the government introduced five ordinances to amend dozens of laws,” he said during his address in the House of Representatives on Friday. “Over the last 35 years, the NC has led the government 12 times, while the CPN-UML was at the helm seven times. After ruling for 35 years, are you now saying that the country’s development would be delayed by six days if these ordinances weren’t introduced?”

He also criticized the government’s intent behind issuing ordinances overnight through backdoors. “The ruling coalition is not tired of boasting of the two-thirds majority. But now it is resorting to ordinances for governance. This is an insult and disregard for the sovereign parliament,” he said. “It not only reflects the government’s fear of the opposition but also its distrust of its own lawmakers in the ruling coalition.”

Dahal also warned the ruling coalition against using a parliamentary majority to sell the country to mafias. “We are not involved in power games. But if you continue to misuse the parliamentary majority to sell the country to mafias, we will resist,” he said.

The former Prime Minister also said that the ruling coalition’s leaders were afraid that the Maoist Center could disrupt the power dynamics. “I repeat once again in this esteemed parliament—we are no longer in the power game. You can see it yourselves; we have already turned toward the people. We have returned to the dreams and commitments of the martyrs,” he added.

He further stated that the Maoist Center, which was slightly influenced and tainted by its association with the Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML in the past, has now shaken off that dust and realigned itself with the poor, marginalized communities and oppressed classes.
