KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory cautioning Nepali citizens against falling prey to fraudulent job offers in Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos.
The ministry issued the advisory following a rise in cases where Nepali nationals are lured with promises of attractive salaries in the IT sector and subsequently forced into illegal activities.
According to the ministry, criminal groups have been trafficking Nepalis into Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos, where they are subjected to forced labor, including long working hours, physical abuse and non-payment of wages. Their passports are also confiscated, the ministry said in the advisory.
The ministry also said there has been an increase in applications for rescue at Nepali embassies in Yangon and Bangkok.
It has advised Nepali citizens to avoid fraudulent job offers, verify employers before accepting jobs and traveling abroad and seek assistance if needed.
