Kora 2024 to see over 4,000 cyclists

KATHMANDU: Over 4,000 cyclists are expected to participate in the 14th edition of Kora this Saturday.

According to the organizers, the biggest ride in the Himalayas will see over 4,000 cyclists participating in over 15 locations in Nepal. The cyclists will cover a combined 200,000 km, they added.

The participants will also raise funds to upgrade the Pump Track in Nepalgunj.

Started in 2011 with just 35 cyclists, the Kathmandu ride has always started and ended in Patan. It makes a clockwise circuit of Kathmandu in 50 km, 75 km, 100 km trails and a newly introduced ultra trail of 140 km. The event is organized on the third Saturday of July every year.

The Kathmandu ride alone is expected to attract about 2,500 cyclists this year, according to the organizers.

Lalitpur Metropolitan City Office is the co-host of the Kora 2024. “Lalitpur aims to be a smart cycle-friendly city, and without a critical mass of inhabitants riding cycles, we can never reach that status,” Lalitpur Mayor Chiri Babu Maharjan said. “Events like the Kora help this process of getting more and more people cycling, and creating a cycling culture within the city.”
