KATHMANDU: Police have arrested Sundari Rai (31) of Jogidaha in Triyuga Municipality-1, Udayapur, on charges of human trafficking.
According to police, Rai allegedly lured a Nepali woman to China under the pretext of marriage. A team deployed by the Human Trafficking Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police arrested Rai on Tuesday based on a complaint filed by the victim.
Police investigation revealed that Rai contacted the victim through social media and convinced her to go to China to marry a wealthy Chinese man. She also arranged a meeting between the woman and the Chinese man in Thamel, Kathmandu.
Rai took the victim to China on a visit visa in March last year and sold her to the man for Rs 150,000, police investigation shows.
The victim managed to return to Nepal with the help of the Embassy of Nepal in Beijing and filed a complaint against Rai.
Police have sought a seven-day remand for Rai from the Kathmandu District Court.
