KATHMANDU: Nepal Police has urged Nepalis returning from abroad not to bring gold, precious metals or other goods into the country at the request of strangers, brokers or other individuals.
Issuing a public advisory, the Tribhuvan International Airport Security Office of the Nepal Police said such activities are illegal and warned that investigations and legal action are underway against those involved in the smuggling of gold and other prohibited goods. “Anyone found involved in illegal transportation of such items would face legal action,” the office said.
Stating that Nepalis returning home after working in countries including the UAE and Qatar are being lured by strangers, brokers and others with financial incentives to carry gold bars, precious metals and other items into Nepal, the office urged travelers not to bring gold, precious metals or other goods into Nepal on behalf of strangers, brokers or anyone else. “We advised passengers to be fully aware of the contents of their luggage, keep purchase receipts and other required documents, comply with prevailing customs laws and avoid being influenced by brokers,” the office added in the advisory.
The office has also requested travelers to immediately inform security personnel if they notice any suspicious activity or encounter attempts to lure them into carrying goods through Tribhuvan International Airport.
