KATHMANDU: The Nepal Stock Exchange (Nepse) index experienced a decline of 21.91 points to close the opening trading day of the week at 2,008.03 points on Sunday.
Although the Nepse index snapped a three-day losing streak and posted gains of 8.01 points in the previous trading session on Thursday, which ignited hopes of recovery among investors, the index reverted to its downward trend on Sunday.
Trading opened at 2,033.2 points on Sunday and promptly embarked on a downward trajectory. Although the benchmark index managed to recover from its initial losses and attain modest gains by midday, the market eventually plummeted, concluding the day 1.07% lower.
Share prices of only 29 companies advanced on the day, while 190 witnessed declines and eight remained unchanged.
All trading groups incurred losses on that day, with the highest loss coming from the Hydropower Index which recorded a decline of 2.34%. The Hotels & Tourism index and Manufacturing & Processing sub-indices followed suit, registering losses of 1.85% and 1.65%, respectively.
In terms of turnover, IME Life Insurance Company Ltd topped the charts with shares worth Rs 66.30 million traded. Next on the list were Himalayan Distillery Ltd and Jyoti Bikas Bank Ltd with turnovers of Rs 46.35 million and Rs 45.24 million, respectively.
A total of 4.46 million units of shares, amounting to Rs 1.44 billion, changed hands on the bourse on Sunday. The overall market capitalization reached Rs 3.01 trillion.
