KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Secretary Shankar Pokharel has defended the party’s decision to remove the 70-year limit for central committee members.
Addressing a talk program at the party headquarters on Monday, Pokharel said the age limit alone won’t bring transformation to the party. “The decision will, in no way, disrupt the leadership transition through a democratic process,” he added.
Pokharel also clarified that the 70-year age limit was removed to address questions that would arise with the nomination of Mukunda Neupane to the central committee.
Neupane recently joined UML, ditching CPN (Unified Socialist).
“This move is not something that needs to be questioned because UML believes in democratic practices. UML is way ahead of other parties in terms of leadership transition,” said Pokharel.
Referring to the party’s decision to remove the 70-year age limit, former UML leader Bamdev Gautam said he was open to rejoining UML if party chairman KP Sharma Oli invites him.
