Four viewpoints in Annapurna region that you must not miss Poon Hill

KATHMANDU: The Annapurna region is one of the most popular trekking destinations in Nepal and is renowned for its spectacular mountain vistas, diverse landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. The region puts even the Everest region behind in terms of visitor numbers. Located in western Nepal, the Annapurna region is named after the Annapurna mountain range, which includes several peaks over 7,000 meters, including Annapurna I (8091m), the tenth-highest mountain in the world.

There are many treks in the region including the epic Annapurna Circuit Trek and the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. For those seeking a shorter trek with incredible sunrise views, the Ghandruk-Ghorepani trek is an excellent option. This trek takes around 5-6 days and offers breathtaking vistas of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. There are many vantage points for mountain views. While trekkers flock to popular viewpoints like Poon Hill, there are hidden gems in the region that offer equally mesmerizing vistas.

Poon Hill: Poon Hill (3,210m) is one of the most popular viewpoints in the Annapurna region of Nepal. Located within the Annapurna Conservation Area, it offers stunning panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks, including Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Poon Hill is included in the itinerary of almost all the visitors doing the popular Ghandruk-Ghorepani trek. Those stopping in Ghorepani on the trek to Jomsom also include Poon Hill in their itinerary. Poon Hill is famous for sunrise and mountain views. On a clear day, one can enjoy views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges dominate the skyline, with peaks such as Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Nilgiri, and Hiunchuli standing prominently. Accessibility, stunning views, and cultural encounters make Poon Hill a must-visit destination in the Annapurna region.

Getting There: Poon Hill is a hike of about an hour from Ghorepani.

Khopra Ridge:
Khopra Ridge (3,660m) presents a breathtaking Himalayan panorama that rivals the more popular viewpoints in the region. The trail to Khopra Ridge takes trekkers through rhododendron forests, charming villages, and terraced fields, culminating in awe-inspiring vistas of snow-capped peaks, including Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, and Nilgiri. The tranquility and relative seclusion of Khopra Ridge offers an intimate connection with nature that is often missed by those sticking to the beaten path. The trek to Khopra Ridge can be extended with a visit to the picturesque Khyaer Lake on the lap of Annapurna South.

Getting There: A hike of about a day from Ghorepani will take you to your night halt at Upper Chistibung. From here, Khopra Ridge is a hike of about four hours.

Muldai Hill

Muldai Hill:
Tucked away on the famous Ghandruk-Ghorepani Trek lies the Muldai Hill viewpoint. Muldai Hill (3637m) is truly a hidden gem that promises panoramic delights. Though lesser-known, Muldai Hill rewards adventurers with an unspoiled natural setting and a panoramic view of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. The views here are much better and closer compared to Poon Hill. As trekkers ascend through dense forests and reach the ridge, the Annapurna South, Himchuli, Machapuchhre, and other towering peaks majestically reveal themselves. The trail to Muldai Hill continues to Khopra Ridge via Chistibung.

Getting There: Leave the Ghandruk-Ghorepani trail at Tadapani and head toward Dobato on the Khopra Ridge trail. Muldai Hill is a hike of about 45 minutes from Dobato.

Trekking through picturesque landscapes, including rhododendron forests and remote villages, adventurers are rewarded with breathtaking views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machapuchhre, and more. Mohare Danda’s focus on sustainable tourism and community involvement adds an enriching cultural element to the experience. Mohare Danda is a half-day hike from Poon Hill.
