KATHMANDU: Eight political parties following Maoist ideology have announced that they will oppose any actions undermining the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and retaliate against such activities.
The leaders of these parties met at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Tuesday where they reached this decision. Prime Minister and Chairman of CPN (Maoist Center) Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, Nepal Samajbadi Party Chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai, CP Gajurel of CPN (Revolutionary Maoist), Khadga Bahadur Bishwakarma of CPN (Maoist), Dharmendra Bastola of CPN (Bahumat), Bishwa Bhakta Dulal ‘Ahuti’ of Nepal Scientific Socialist Communist Party, Karanjit Budhathoki of CPN (Maoist Socialist), and Narayan Prasad Dhital of Maoist Communist Party attended the meeting.
Maoist Center leaders such as Vice Chairman Krishna Bahadur Mahara, General Secretary Dev Gurung, Deputy General Secretary Shakti Basnet, Matrika Yadav, and Haribol Gajurel were also present at the meeting.
Most of these parties and leaders were involved in the CPN (Maoist)’s armed movement in 1996.
Addressing a program in Kathmandu two years ago, Prime Minister Dahal had made a controversial statement regarding the responsibility for the deaths during the Maoist insurgency. He had stated that he would only take responsibility for the deaths of 5,000 out of the 17,000 killed.
The families of those killed during the insurgency tried to file a writ in the Supreme Court against Dahal’s statement. Although the apex court initially refused to register the petition, it later stated that conflict-era cases should not be prolonged, paving the way for the registration of petitions against conflict-era cases.
