Gaur Massacre victims, government sign five-point agreement

KATHMANDU: The Gaur Massacre Victims’ Struggle Committee and the government have reached a five-point agreement.

This agreement was formalized following discussions between representatives of the committee and government officials at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday.

As per the agreement, the Ministry has expressed commitment to investigate the complaints filed by the family of victims and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. The ministry has also agreed to publish the names of the victims, who were declared martyrs by the cabinet meeting held on December 24, 2008, in the Gazette. Likewise, the ministry will also initiate the process to recognize other individuals, who were not included in the list previously, as martyrs.

Furthermore, the government has pledged to establish a memorial in honor of the individuals who lost their lives in the incident. As per the agreement, the government will also appeal to the Council of Ministers to provide compensation to the families of the victims.

A total of 27 individuals, including 26 affiliated with the then CPN (Maoist), lost their lives in the violent clashe that erupted when the Madheshi People’s Rights Forum (MPRF) and CPN (Maoist) organized simultaneous rallies at the same location in Gaur on March 21, 2007.
