KATHMANDU: Former government secretaries have requested President Bidya Devi Bhandari to not authenticate the ordinance brought by the government to withdraw pending cases against leaders and cadres of different political parties or groups.

A team of former administrators led by former secretary Dwarikanath Dhungel Tuesday met President Bhandari and submitted a memorandum to this extent. They also drew the attention of the President toward the ordinance, terming the ordinance a wrong move by the government.

Meanwhile, 13 former inspector generals of Nepal Police have expressed objection to the government’s decision of bringing an ordinance to release individuals convicted by courts.

The Nepal Former IGP Forum held a meeting at the residence of former IG Shyam Bhakta Thapa’s residence and issued a statement, requesting the government to withdraw the ordinance.

The former chiefs of the Nepal Police asked the government to scrap the ordinance stating that it is against the norms and spirit of the democratic system.

Former inspector generals Shyam Bhakta Thapa, Motilal Bhora, Achyut Krishna Kharel, Om Bikram Rana, Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan, Ramesh Chand Thakuri, Rabindra Pratap Shah, Kuber Singh Rana, Upendra Kanta Aryal, Thakur Prasad Gyawali, Prakash Aryal, Sarbendra Khanal and Shailesh Thapa Chhetri have signed the statement.

The government brought the ordinance on Friday to grant amnesty to Resham Chaudhary, who has been convicted of masterminding the Tikapur incident of 2015 which claimed eight lives, among others. Nepal Police’s SP Laxman Neupane and Inspectors Keshav Bohora and Balaram Bista, among others, were brutally killed in the incident.
