Nagarik Unmukti threatens to obstruct assembly proceedings

KATHMANDU: Nagarik Unmukti Party has announced that it will obstruct proceedings in the Sudurpashchim Province Assembly until its founder, Resham Chaudhary, is released from jail.

Speaking at the first meeting of the province assembly on Monday, Chief Whip Laxman Kishor Chaudhary stated that the party will disrupt proceedings unless Resham Chaudhary and other party cadres serving jail time in Kailali are released by the Maghi festival which falls on January 15.

Chaudhary argued that the Tikapur incident, which occurred during the drafting of a new constitution in 2015 and involved demands for political rights by the Tharu community, was a political incident and not a criminal one, and called on the state to find a resolution.

A total of eight people – seven police personnel and a minor – died in Tikapur of Kailali on August 24, 2015, as participants of Tharuhat Struggle Committee protested the government’s decision to create Sudurpashchim province as per the demand of Akhanda Sudurpaschim Movement.

Nagarik Unmukti Party’s support is crucial for forming a government in the Sudurpashchim Province, and the party has claimed the position of chief minister for itself.
