Kamal Bahadur Shah of NC elected Chief Minister of Sudurpashchim

DHANGADHI: Kamal Bahadur Shah of Nepali Congress (NC) has been appointed as the Chief Minister of Sudurpaschim Province, a few hours after UML’s Rajendra Singh Rawal failed to get a vote of confidence.

Province Chief Devraj Joshi appointed Shah to the post as per Article 168 (3) of the Constitution of Nepal. He will be administered the oath of office and secrecy on Friday.

Nepal Congress is the largest party in the 53-member province assembly with 18 seats.

Shah will now be required to get a vote of confidence within 30 days.

The Article 168 (3) of the Constitution of Nepal, states: “In case the Chief Minister cannot be appointed pursuant to clause (2) within thirty days after the date of declaration of the final results of election or the Chief Minister so appointed fails to secure a vote of confidence pursuant to clause (4), the Chief of Province shall appoint as the Chief Minister the parliamentary party leader of the party having the highest number of seats in the province assembly.

UML’s Rawal was appointed Chief Minister with the support of seven parties on January 11 as per Article 138 (2) of the constitution. But he lost the job earlier on Thursday after failing to get a vote of confidence.
